I have been involved with welding and joining since 2007, graduating in 2012 with a B.S. in welding engineering and minor in nuclear engineering from The Ohio State University. After graduation, I worked at NRG Energy (Houston, TX) as a welding engineer until January 2020. NRG is an electric utility that owns and operates power generation facilities across the globe. As welding engineer, I ensured company-wide weld document (PQR, WPS, welder qualification) compliance with industry codes and standards (ASME, AWS, etc.), solved weldability issues and performed quality/welding assessments and audits. I would generate and implement project specific weld repair plans that contained all the technical details of the weld repair including WPS selection, heat treatment and NDT hold point requirements with acceptance criteria. Working with contractors and vendors occurred regularly as I performed many field welding engineer roles. These field welding engineer roles included on-site travel to oversee every aspect of the job from cradle to grave, generating a detailed report upon completion.
During my tenure at NRG I was exposed to turbomachinery repair in an OSHA VPP Star-certified and ISO 9001:2015 repair/service facility. I would oversee jobs that proceeded through the facility writing detailed work scopes, made engineering decisions/drawings, communicated directly with customers, purchased raw materials/consumables, visited vendor facilities, generated quality control documents/data sheets and generated final reports/presentations. At the facility we would perform the following functions for customers within the energy industry: coatings, combustion turbine rotor repair, material analysis, non-destructive examination, pump repair, rotor life analysis, steam turbine repair, steam turbine stationary component repair, turbine casing repair, welding and light fabrication, wind turbine main shaft repair and valve repair.
Following NRG, I joined Alloy Precision Technologies (formerly Alloy Bellows & Precision Welding) (Cleveland, OH) as a welding/manufacturing engineer in February 2020. Alloy Precision Technologies is an AS9100 certified company servicing the aerospace, oil & gas, power generation, medical and defense industries by manufacturing thin-walled bellows and tubing (0.005” to 0.020”), welded/brazed bellows assemblies and machined tight-tolerance precision components. At Alloy, I was responsible for maintaining all welding/brazing documents, designing and implementing weld tooling and developing weld schedules on new product lines. I also improved all aspects of the manufacturing process to improve quality, reduce scrap and increase shop floor efficiency.
